What Bessie Head had to say for, and of, herself in mid-1985! (Part 2)

"Sometimes a book burns its way into ones mind and is never forgotten", continued Bessie Head in her Themes Found in a Writer's Common Workshop, the first part of which I quoted last week. "This was so with an early biography I read of the German playwright, Bertolt Brecht - A Choice Of Evils - published in 1960.

 

The biography divided Brecht's life into three main phases: There was Brecht, the gay young man who produced the 'Three Penny Opera' and who could turn the whole city of Berlin upside down. There was Brecht, after he had read Das Kapital and became the great convert to Marxism.
