The mirage of unity for the Umbrella for Democratic Change in Tonota South has evaporated with Maokaneng Bontshetse announcing that far from handing the parliamentary ticket to Pono Moatlhodi, he is actually campaigning.

Three months before the general elections, the constituency is split down the middle between Botswana National Front members, Bontshetse and Moatlhodi, with both camps expecting the upcoming Presidents’ Day conference to finally decide between them.

While divisions were initially reported in the constituency after Moatlhodi decamped from the ruling party in April, an uneasy calm ensued with Bontshetse reportedly stepping aside for the seasoned politician.
