Road accidents kill four people

At least four people died in 338 separate road traffic accidents recorded by the police in the past week. A total of 203 people have died in road traffic accidents since the beginning of the year as compared to 200 recorded during the same period last year.

The police have charged 752 motorists for excessive speeding out of 1,821 cases of traffic violation in the past week. A breathalyser test for alcohol was conducted on 243 motorists and 10 of them have been charged for driving under the influence of alcohol while 26 were booked for using hand held mobile phones while driving.


Six murder cases were reported during the past week. Seven suspects were arrested for the murders and one is still at large while another  committed suicide. Since the beginning of the year, 120 murder cases have been recorded compared to 88 during the same period last year.
The police have recorded 38 armed robbery cases in which cash amounting to over P18,000 and property valued at over 61,000 were stolen. Out of the 38 armed robbery cases reported, seven involved the use of handguns, 24 involved knives, and the rest involved various weapons. This brings the number of armed robbery cases reported since the beginning of the year to 954 compared to 869 during the same period in 2006.
The police recorded 27 rape cases in which 16 suspects were arrested. Since the beginning of the year, 714 rape cases were reported compared to 712 during the same period in 2006.
In the past week, three motor vehicles were reported stolen and none of them has been recovered. This brings to 224 the number of motor vehicles reported stolen since the beginning of the year compared to 256 during the same period in 2006.
