Issues of promotion have allegedly divided senior police

This month’s police service promotions have left the service divided, with many senior officers querying the criteria used for the upgrades and claiming the decisions were fraught with inconsistencies and favouritism.

The Botswana Police Service on Friday published a list of its latest promotions, provoking anger and disgruntlement among those who say they had been serving selflessly and hopefully for years. According to the list, police spokesperson, Christopher Mbulawa has been promoted to senior assistant commissioner of police, a rank that falls bellow the deputy commissioner of police. Three other assistant commissioners have also been promoted. Fifteen senior superintendents are now assistant commissioners, 28 superintendents have been promoted to senior superintendents, and 57 assistant superintendents  were elevated to become superintendents.

Seventy-eight inspectors went a rung higher to become assistant superintendents, 114 sub-inspectors became inspectors and 154 sergeants became sub-inspectors. Two hundred and eight constables became sergeants.
