Mbulawa says they are obliged by law to provide security for shopping complexes and financial institutions like banks.

He was responding to complaints by some police officers that they are required to do guard duty at Choppies supermarkets. "It is odd that Choppies is the only supermarket that is extended such courtesy in the country. Literally, we have been turned into guards as we spend more time doing guard duties at Choppies complexes because we are not patrolling as is the case with other shopping complexes, which do not have Choppies outlets," said an officer who spoke on condition of anonymity.
