Nurses Welcome Appointment Of Salaries Commission

The president of Nurses Association of Botswana, Joyce Tamocha, says although nurses are happy that a presidential commission to review public service salaries has been set up, Botswana's 'Nightingales' are concerned that Government has not ratified ILO Convention 149.

The convention sets standards of work for nurses, boosts their professional and political profile, and recommends the provision of incentives for nurses to remain in their jobs.
Tamocha says owing to poor salaries and conditions of service, their profession is the hardest-hit by migration, both locally and internationally.

She says nurses are committed to their profession, which they regard as a vocation; but they are being pushed out of it by poor conditions.
