Nijel gets a rousing welcome in marobela

MAROBELA: The tiny village of Marobela erupted into excitement on Thursday when the Olympic Games hero Nijel Amos, accompanied by two Team Botswana Olympic members, Isaac Makwala and Oteng Oteng visited the village.

The London 2012 Olympic silver medalist in the 800 metres got a rousing welcome fitting a hero of his status. At the entrance of the village dozens of excited residents, among them Amos's sister Francinah turned out with cheers and banners to welcome the country's Olympic medalist home. Amantle Montsho was missing among the Olympians because she is currently competing in the Diamond League in Sweden.

After greetings at the village entrance the Olympians proceeded to the village Kgotla. At the Kgotla there was a near stampede from friends, relatives and well-wishers grappling to  see the 18 year-old. Residents from the neighbouring villages of Sebina, Mathangwane and Gulubane also attended the event in large numbers.The villagers were also in an upbeat mood singing songs of joy to praise the youngster for his historic exploits and massive talent. At the Kgotla, Amos was met by close relatives among them his uncle Ali Molomo Maano and his grandmother Gakenaope Amos. An emotional Amos posed for pictures with his granny before taking his seat.Speaking in an interview at the event one of the residents, 68-year-old Ntlogelang Bani stated that he is excited by Amos's achievements. "I knew him during his young days as a child but I never knew he was an athlete until recently. He has raised the status of our village and I have no doubt that this will motivate youngsters to emulate him," he said.
