A human settlements report by Statistics Botswana has shown that the majority of citizens live in one-roomed shelter, followed by two-roomed accommodation. According to the 2013 Human Settlements Report, at least 167,126 Batswana were living in single rooms, followed by 118,979 living in two-roomed accommodation.

Nationally, the report found a degree of accommodation congestion in households, concluding that the situation puts people at the risk of contracting airborne diseases.

The Statistics Botswana report focussed on households with five or more persons occupying one room as these would indicate overcrowding.
