Minister defends Japan Tobacco deal

The Minister of Agriculture, Christiaan de Graaff has defended the country’s research partnership with Japan Tobacco saying that the relationship is beneficial. In a briefing to the media on current topical issues in the agricultural sector yesterday, De Graaff said the country stands to benefit from the deal in terms of technological transfer and investments.

He said the country is protected as it co-owns the patent of the novel gene that the subject of the research partnership with Japan Tobacco.

De Graaff said there has been confusion leading to claims that Japan Tobacco intends to use the gene technology to sell its tobacco in the country.
