I made a mistake going to BDP - unionist

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Former Botswana Mine Workers Union (BMWU) President Rex Tambula has indicated that he intends to quit the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) to join the Botswana National Front (BNF).

This comes at a time when Tambula had applied to contest Mmadinare West council seat under the BDP ticket.
However, in an interview with Mmegi, he said he was going to withdraw his application as soon as he tendered his resignation letter " very soon" to Tsholetsa House. Tambula said he became a BDP member after quitting his job at BCL mine in 2008."I later realised that I had made a mistake by choosing the BDP. Combining my trade union and my mine work experience, BDP was not the party to join looking at the appalling welfare situation of workers in the country," he said.

He added that he has observed that the Trade Dispute Act and the Employers Organisational Act sideline workers at the expense the employer.  He also said by joining BNF he also wanted to demonstrate that not everybody who retires should join the ruling party and that a scenario whereby every retiree joins BDP is wrong and compromises democracy. "I could have joined the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) but the fact that they refused to affiliate to the Umbrella (Umbrella for Democratic Change) showed me that they were not serious. "It is important for all opposition parties to unite to fight the ruling party," he said.Tambula added that he was not joining BNF because he wanted any position but because the Umbrella members are, according to him serious in opposing the ruling party.
