Heavy rainfall expected over festive period - press release

The Department of Meteorological Services through the Weather Forecasting Division wishes to inform the public that heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightening are forecast to occur from Christmas eve into boxing day (24th to 26th December).

Heavy falls of 50mm or more in 24hours period are expected over Ngamiland, Gantsi, Kgalagadi, Southern, South-East, Kgatleng, Kweneng and Northern Central Districts. These heavy rains might lead to possibility of flooding over some areas within the above mentioned Districts.

The anticipated rains will be triggered by a easterly trough which will start affecting the country on the 23rd and further strengthening and intensifying from the 24th to the 26th and culminating into a “cut-off” low pressure system which will inevitably induce intense instability across the country.
