Govt spends P3m on watermelons

Government has spent nearly P3 million directly on purchasing of watermelons for the primary schools, President Ian Khama has said.

In his State of the Nation address under the theme 'Delivering people-centred development', Khama revealed that a total of 2,283 local farmers countrywide have benefited from this initiative. He stated that the Ministry of Local Government has been proactive in its support of local farmers.

"During the 2009/10 financial year, it spent over P153 million purchasing food from local producers and traders to supply its primary schools and clinics with a further P69 million worth of purchases from April to July of this year," Khama said.
