Since the beginning of the year, the city council has been using its facilities and personnel to provide waste management services. However, the council is not coping and there has been irregular collection of refuse in Gaborone. GCC spokesman, Seeletso Lekgaba said they will put out tenders for waste management at the beginning of their financial year in April. She explained that the contracts they had with the waste management companies - Frenic, Cleaning Wizards, Barakwa Investments and Base Investments - ended in December and were not renewed. She said that since the contracts ended, the council has been under strain as it does not have the capacity to manage waste. Lekgaba said the waste management companies were able to collect refuse thrice in a week but the council is not able to do this. Due to the limited capacity, the council collects garbage once in a week.
She said the GCC garbage collections trucks are not in a good condition and at times they are forced to borrow transport from other council departments. Lekgaba said they were satisfied with the services provided by the four companies but unfortunately, their contracts had come to an end. However, she stated that they had differences with Frenic and the matter is in court.
