Cllr blames MP for defecting to BDP

A former Botswana National Front (BNF) councillor has said she defected to the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) because of her differences with the Member of Parliament for Letlhakeng East, Gordon Mokgwathi. Irene Mokgwathi who represents Moshaweng in Letlhakeng East said despite her complaints about the sour relations with the MP, the BNF never listened.

She indicated that the strained relationship made her work difficult. "I needed his support as an area MP but he never cooperated. Instead he even opposed some of the projects that I initiated for my ward," she said. The councillor complained about factionalism in the BNF leadership. "These things at the end of the day affect people at lower structures," she said. She acknowledged that she might find challenges in the BDP but she argued that the ruling party has strong support structures in place. She feels she can make a difference in people's lives when she is in the BDP. "At the BNF, we only preach about poverty and how people live in misery but we never take any action," she said. She pointed out that the BDP actively improves the lives of Batswana.

The BNF publicity secretary, Moeti Mohwasa is however unfazed by the defection. He argues that Moshaweng is a stronghold of the BNF and the party is certain that it will win the area in the coming election. "It is unfortunate that the law permits politicians to cross with their seats. The law should just be amended to correct this," he said. He maintained that it is Mokgwathi's democratic right to defect. "We are not worried because we too have gained. There are BDP members who have defected to BNF," he said. However, Mohwasa was shocked by the complaints levelled against the area MP.
