Chinese arrested over work permits

FRANCISTOWN: A number of Chinese were arrested yesterday for working without permits, the police have said.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Chabaesele Kesupetswe said that they nabbed a good number of Chinese in shops and other businesses for working without permits. He accused some Chinese of applying for business permits on the promise that they will employ Batswana but later they bring their compatriots to take up the jobs.

He explained that in some instances, Batswana are offered jobs but still there will be some Chinese working without permits. Construction companies are said to be attracting more foreigners without valid permits and the authorities have promised to deal with them. Kesupetswe said that a foreigner's valid passport is not a licence to work in Botswana.
