The 2011 Population and Housing Census has revealed that a majority of Batswana face acute housing and accommodation challenges.

The census findings indicate that up to 286,105 people live in one-roomed and two-roomed houses. Of the 167,126 Batswana residing in one-roomed houses, 85,366 or (51%) live in shacks while 50,629 or 30.29% live in one-room grass-thatched huts.

The census show that nationally, there is some degree of congestion in households and this poses many risks like the spread of airborne diseases.
