Botswana and Namibia have signed an agreement on civil aviation search and rescue operations in both countries. Speaking at the signing ceremony last week, the Minister of Transport and Communications Nonofo Molefhi said that the joint exercises will be made to allow periodic visits between their Rescue Coordinator Centres (RCCs).

Molefi said the agreement is essential in the sense that it provides all possible assistance to rescue personnel of aircraft, which would have landed within that state's territory, whether because of an accident, distress, emergency, or unintended landing.

The benefits of such an agreement are to provide coordination of Search and Rescue services in Botswana to meet domestic needs and international requirements; support lives during accidents; provide an overall plan for coordination of civil Search and Rescue operations for effective use of resources; and to integrate available civil Search and Rescue resources into a cooperative network for greater protection of life and property.
