Botswana land up for auction

Land in Botswana will soon be auctioned for commercial, industrial and civic and community use, putting an end to land applications. This is contained in the new Land Policy 2012 which was scheduled to be tabled in the just ended Parliament session.

The new land policy states that this type of land will be leased or sold at market price through public tenders. The new policy also states that commercial centres will be reserved for single developers to facilitate timely development with enhanced aesthetic value.  However, the policy also states that preference will be given to citizen consortia in local commercial centres, while corner shops will be reserved for small citizen investors.According to the new draft land policy, it is not prudent to allocate commercial, industrial and civic and community plots on the basis of a waiting list because this hampers economic usage of land."It has also resulted in widespread speculation on land allocation. To ensure transparency and development of land, as well as to facilitate achievement of economic diversification and industrial development policy objectives, access to land for investment will be based on investors' financial and management capability," states the policy.

It also states that commercial, industrial, civic and community plots will be planned and demarcated before being made available to investors through public tenders. On residential land, the new land policy details that residential plots will be planned and demarcated before allocations. It also says every Motswana will be eligible for allocation of one plot in his or her home village and another elsewhere in Botswana. However, additional plots may be acquired through inheritance, other legal means, and the private market. On masimo (farm land) the new policy says the limit will be one tshimo per household.
