Plans to merge two of Botswana's premier research and technology institutions have been shelved, in favour of dissolution and formation of a new body. Information reaching Mmegi indicates that the Botswana Technology Centre (BOTEC) and Rural Industries Promotion Company (RIPCO) will not merge as previously planned. Instead, both will be wound up and a new body will be formed to assume their mandates by April 2008.

Retrenchment packages for the employees of the two organisations will be finalised by September this year and supplementary funding is to be secured by November.
A source said because of the new development, there is no guarantee that employees will be  hired  by  the new  organisation. A Presidential Commission of Inquiry has recommended the merger of BOTEC with a related institution with a new programme-based mandate and structure.

The BOTEC Commission was appointed by President Festus Mogae in 2005 to investigate allegations of financial and administrative irregularities and corruption at the organisation. The commission was appointed after a motion by the Member of Parliament for Gaborone West South, Robert Molefhabangwe. An employee of BOTEC said they are aware of the latest developments and they are waiting for a report from the Ministry of Communications, Science and Technology.
