Body of BDF soldier flown home

The body of the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldier who was killed in Darfur, Sudan was flown back home yesterday. Cabinet ministers Baledzi Gaolathe, Kitso Mokaila, Daniel Kwelagobe, Lesego Motsumi and Frank Ramsden were among the people who were at Sir Seretse Khama Airport to receive the body of 40-year-old Major Gaolatlhe Tiro.

He was flown from Dubai through the Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Tiro and nine other peacekeepers from the African Union died when rebel forces attacked their base in Haskania, southern Darfur.

Other dead peacekeepers were from Senegal, Mali and Nigeria. The rebels kidnapped a number of peace-keepers. Tiro, who was a pilot joined the BDF in 1993. He will be buried in his home village of Manyana tomorrow.
