Two weeks after its official launch, the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) has said it has registered more than 10,000 members.

Kabo Morwaeng who is responsible for mobilisation in the party said even before the launch, they had received many calls for membership.  He said at the May 29 convention where they launched the new party, all the 10,000 application forms were taken. "We had to go and process more which we have been sending to all the 57 constituencies where people have been requesting for the forms," he said.

He said they have set up interim structures in most of the constituencies. At the moment, the BMD is working with its supporters to ensure that the party presence is felt in all the constituencies. Morwaeng promised that soon, all the constituencies will have interim structures to prepare for congresses at constituency and ward levels.  He said their web address has received 53,000 visits and this shows that there is a lot of interest in what the party is doing. He said that soon, they will have a headquarter. "We have seen a few office places, but we are not quite impressed. However I can tell you that very soon, before this month-end, we will have one as we are currently negotiating with some people. We need a big office as we will be doing a lot of things. Regarding the membership cards, I can also confidently tell you that we will print them and give them to our members. This party is growing at a high speed," he said.
