BCP to re-table land audit motion

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) will re-table the land audit motion rejected by Parliament recently. BCP spokesperson, Taolo Lucas said the party president and Gaborone Central MP, Dumelang Saleshando has been asked to bring back the motion by the executive committee. The motion will be re-tabled in October after the State of the Nation Address.

Lucas said they believe that before then, they will have convinced Batswana that the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has a lot to hide in land ownership. He said that they will hold demonstrations in Francistown on May 18 and Gaborone in June to sensitise people on the importance of equitable land distribution. The BCP spokesperson said they are aware that if land is not distributed equally, it can lead to national conflict. He said they expect the police to cooperate in the demonstrations as the issue affects nation. They have announced demonstrations plans in advance to give police enough time.

Saleshando said sparsely populated Botswana should have enough land for its people given that it is roughly the size as France, which has over 65 million citizens. Available statistics however tell a different story. According to the BCP leader the informal or 'black market' for land in Botswana should be a matter of great concern. Young people and the poor are unable to secure land as it is traded at exorbitant prices in the informal market. When the poor and youth secure such land, they are unable to access the means to develop it.
