Abused woman begs to be imprisoned

FRANCISTOWN: A convicted Zimbabwean woman cried bitterly, ironically, for getting a non-custodial sentence. Pamela Chikazhe aged nineteen was convicted on charges of failure to supply necesseties of life. She is said to have abandoned her four-day-old baby girl in a yard in block three in Francistown on August 5.

Chikazhe started sobbing bitterly when the magistrate passed sentence. Senior Magistrate Peggy Hamoonga sentenced the accused person to twelve months in prison wholly suspended for two years. Hamoonga said that though this was a serious offence the accused had pleaded guilty and not wasted the court's time and that she was a first offender.

Chikazhe begged the magistrate to send her to prison so she would not have to go back to Zimbabwe where her uncle was sexually molesting her.
