Mythology has sustained the ruling elite

Mmegi political analyst KEINEETSE KEINEETSE argues that for this nation to exist, a number of myths had to be sold to the populance

Botswana's political elite are like rock climbers; often pursuing careers they cannot determine beforehand and occasionally finding themselves at the very edge of a cliff. But don't make any mistake, once they have made it to the top table, they are men and women who wield incredible amount of power, that is, until  exposed for the cheats that most of them are.

Mostly have risen from the ashes of poverty and  colonial plunder to create private fortunes as representatives of the silent majority that constitute the stock for the emerging political elite that thrives while the nation  sinks in abject poverty and political exclusion. Amongst the successes to be counted in favour of this  elite, is a culture of narcissist self love that proliferates a web of myths, both old types of myth and the newer urban trickster type myth, to explain their own hold on to power.
