Mogapi and Mogapinyana: villages of contrasts

MOGAPINYANA: Usually villages derive their names from the first settler, a powerful doctor, a chief, the location and even the experience the residents went through before they settled in the area. But the Mmadinare villages of Mogapi and Mogapinyana have veered from the well-trodden path.

The names would suggest that the names are adjacent to each other but this is misleading. The villages are far apart and have very little in common. Mogapinyana residents are Batswapong while those in Mogapi are Babirwa. The totem for Mogapi residents is a buffalo while those in Mogapinyana is hare or kgope.
Ironically each village residents claim dominance over the other in terms of who settled first, size and population.

Mogapi is easily accessible as it lies along the main road that connects Sefhophe and Lerala. To reach Mogapinyana from Palapye, the right route to follow is the one that leads to Matolwane and passes the Tamasane junction to the turn labelled Diloro, Kgagodi, Maokaatuma. It is at times difficult to get a ride from Palapye. Mogapinyana is separated from Maokaatuma by just a river.
