German Matsheke, the veteran truck driver

FRANCISTOWN: German Matsheke is a veteran truck driver who has been in the transport industry for the past 40 years. Now at 71 years of age he shares with us his experiences in this industry, which started in 1964 when he was a youthful 24-year-old.

Back then he worked for a man known as Mapharangwane, who had a little transportation business. Matsheke's job was to transport people from Francistown to Nswazwi using a van. He soon left and joined another company in 1965 called Cost Green that was involved in the construction of the Francistown-Orapa road.

"In 1969 after the Cost Green Company had completed the Francistown-Orapa road tender, I had by then managed to acquire a heavy-duty drivers license which then opened the doors to the truck driving career," Matsheke said.
