Molokomme should resign

For the first time in history, Botswana finds itself without a Vice President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, two weeks after the general elections.

This is so because President Ian Khama through the Attorney General (AG) Athaliah Molokomme has instituted a constitutional court challenge on the recent amendments of the Parliamentary Standing Orders.  The AG argues that voting should be by a show of hands and that in requiring the use of secret ballot, the Standing Orders violate the constitution.

It has been alleged this is President Khama’s and not AG’s move, as he prefers a show of hands so he can identify those who may go against his preferred choice.
