Letlhakeng West remains in the spotlight

The past weekend was a high watermark in the history of Botswana's democracy, more especially for the people of Letlhakeng West who voted for Botswana Democratic Party's (BDP) Ngaka Ngaka as their new representative in Parliament following the death of Maxwell Motowane, also of the BDP, last year.

Ngaka beat his opponent, Filbert Nagafela, by a margin of over 300, a considerable trouncing and an improvement on Motowane's 32. The BDP used it as a litmus test for its prospects in the next general elections in 2014, and threw everything it could - regardless of propriety - into it: state media and reporters, BX vehicles and drivers, food - rare food - for the ever-starving communities and enlisted the ever-reliable support of the business community that feels in thrall to the ruling party.A tough contest, it was indeed, seeing as how the government has bluntly opposed any suggestion of introducing political party funding, forcing those in the opposition to dig into their shallow personal pockets to fund their campaign while their opponents from the Domkrag monolith enjoy the largess grown too insensitive to the sensibilities of ordinary Batswana. Here they came to prove what everyone knows, and that is that the widespread abjection of Batswana and the opulence of expatriates and non-indigenous Batswana are both structural and deliberate.  This clearly incongruous situation has served Domkrag well and continues to do so and so will be maintained.

Nevertheless, we take the opportunity to commend all involved - the candidates, the electorate, and the parties for maintaining peace during what has been hearty campaign trails and after the poll. This is what makes us a unique nation despite the enormous challenges we face in our daily lives.
