Slash red tape, US trade captains urge

Executives from the US Chamber of Commerce say the red tape surrounding Botswana business processes and permits has the potential of scaring off investors to more efficient competitors on the continent.

A team of executives from the Chamber, led by executive director Scott Eisner, last week completed a fact-finding mission designed to inform its 300,000 plus membership of the various investment and export opportunities in Botswana.

This year, the Chamber is stepping up its southern African focus, establishing a presence in South Africa and reaching out to Botswana, which Eisner describes as a "natural fit," among other potential targets. In an exclusive interview with BusinessWeek at the end of their fact-finding mission, Eisner cautioned that there was high competition in Africa to house each US dollar in investment.
