Easter travellers to SA approach 50,000

Nearly 50,000 travellers from Botswana crossed into South Africa over Easter, as the regional powerhouse's maintained its position as a top destination for local holidaymakers.

Every Easter, thousands of Batswana travel to South Africa to worship, to visit family and friends and to sample various tourist attractions. South African Department of Home Affairs' figures released this week indicate that 49,500 travellers from Botswana crossed over at various border posts from March 29 to April 1.

The travel was made easier as the Groblersbrug (Martin's Drift) and Kopfontein (Tlokweng) border posts extended their operating hours over Easter, opening from 6am to midnight. The two are the busiest border posts between Botswana and South Africa."The extension of operating hours made travel very convenient as annually, we face congestion due to the high number of ZCC members heading to Moria (in Polokwane)," said Thapelo Letshabo, a frequent traveller between Johannesburg and Gaborone.
