BCP youth eye deposed BMD constituencies

Following the expulsion of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), the Botswana Congress Party Youth League (BCPYL) wants at least three of the 13 vacant constituencies to be given to youth.

The UDC is expected to have dealt with the allocation of the constituencies by yesterday.

The BCPYL president, Tlhabologo Furniture on Wednesday said that BCPYL submitted a proposal to the UDC National Executive Committee (NEC) pleading for three constituencies to be reserved for youth candidates.

The three constituencies are Francistown South, Gaborone North and Mogoditshane.

“As it stands the UDC has only one youth candidate contesting out of 57 constituencies being Yandani Boko of Mahalapye East. A derisive 1.75 percent representation and no confidence vote meted on the UDC youth ought to be redressed. However, the proposal does not negate the bilateral negotiations authorised by the UDC NEC at the Moselewapula briefing. We will respect and accept any decision communicated by the UDC politburo,” he said.

He added that

at the first executive committee meeting they resolved to support all the youth candidates of the BCP and the UDC in the upcoming national polls materially and physically.

The BCPYL secretary general Dimpho Mashaba noted with pride that more than 50% of those elected are youths further advancing the belief and motif that young people are ready and capable to lead. Therefore, they are working in tandem with the BCP women’s league to make the BCP the party of choice for all Batswana across the socio-economic spectrum.

Furthermore, Furniture said as the BCPYL committee they are currently working on a bid to host the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY) African Committee, as the African National Congress Youth League hosted the event last year.
