A white BMW X5 was last Friday found burning behind the University of Botswana (UB) main library building.

The head of UB protection services Robert Kalasi told Mmegi that after being notified of the mysterious burning car by a passer-by they attempted to put out the fire but it was too late, as they could not save the vehicle.

Kalasi stated that the fire did not emanate from any of University’s buildings, therefore it could have either been set on the car or it started from within the car. He further pointed out that they were no casualties from the incident.

The police are currently investigating the cause of the fire whilst the owner has been identified as a visitor who had

come to handle some engagements within the University premises.

“It is true we have received the report of a car that was found in flames at UB last Friday and currently investigating the matter to establish what really transpired. We have not yet identified any possible suspects,” said the Assistant superintendent Philindaba Gumede of Central police station.

The incident occurred a week after the closure of the University at the end of an academic semester with a few remaining on-campus students engaged in their attachment courses.

The charred wreckage of the once fancy German machine was finally removed from the university today.
