The duo allegedly has an extensive history since they apparently have known each other from their teens as senior secondary school students where they met and started a relationship.  They both progressed to university where their relationship deteriorated until it broke down.

The ex-boyfriend’s jealous streak allegedly became apparent months before he attempted to kill his girlfriend last Thursday.

In a jealous rage that fateful evening leading to the stabbing, the young woman had asked her ex-boyfriend, also a third-year student, to give her space.  It is alleged that the ex-boyfriend stabbed her with a pair of scissors during his visit at her dormitory.

The university’s director, campus services, Reginald Frank told The Monitor that the duo’s affair dates back to their senior secondary school days and that their parents were aware of their relationship including its ups and downs.

“It appears that recently the girl felt it was not necessary that they be together anymore.  The matter ended up being resolved in front of the duo’s parents where it was agreed that they should separate. I suspect that the lad might have not accepted the girl’s decision, something that influenced his horrific acts,” Frank said.

He said the young man stabbed the young woman several times landing her in hospital where she is currently in a critical state.

Other students were alarmed by her screams and came to her rescue.

“They kicked and forcefully opened the door. He threatened

to stab other students, but luckily they overpowered him and managed to come to her rescue. He then stabbed himself with the same pair of scissors on the neck and hands in an effort to kill himself.  The duo is currently hospitalised at PMH and we have not yet established their age, but they are both doing year three,” Frank said.

He said the school reported the matter to the police and is currently being investigated.  They have contacted the young woman’s parents who have already visited the school to collect their daughter’s belongings.

Frank, however, said even though in the past they had instances where some students attempted to commit suicide, cases where students in a relationship try to kill each other such as this one are not common in their institution.

Central Police station commander, Superintendent Mothusi Phadi said that they are investigating the case to establish what could have caused the misunderstanding between the two.

“The students were lovers. We do not know what could have caused their misunderstanding. We do not know if the (ex-) boyfriend suspected that his (ex-) girlfriend was cheating or not or if there is something else that prompted his behaviour. He used something sharp to stab her and also stabbed himself in the process. We suspect that he wanted to kill himself acting out of fear following what he did to his (ex-) girlfriend,” Phadi said.
