Candidate Master Barileng Gaealashwe has qualified to play against British Grand Master, Niger Short in a simultaneous chess challenge next month. Gaealashwe qualified for the challenge after winning the qualification tournament held at Legae Academy over the weekend.

The Candidate Master would be amongst the 50 players to play against Short. Unfortunately, most of the highly-rated local players did not attend the weekend tournament. Speaking to Monitor Sport, Gaealashwe said being in the tournament was an opportunity for him to play a world class player in Short because he has always admired him growing up as a player.

“I have been doing a lot of physical exercises because one of the misconceptions about chess is that it is a mental sport. But you have to be physically fit to play well. I have been working on a lot of tactics. I want to give him a good game when he comes,” he said.
