Batswana are ranked amongst the richest individuals on the continent, ranking in the top 4, only behind, Mauritius, South Africa and Namibia.According to the AfrAsia Bank Africa Wealth Report 2017, Botswana’s wealth per capita, is $6,700.

However, Namibia’s wealth per capita for 2017 is put at $10,800, while South Africa’s wealth per capita is put at $11,300, and Mauritius at $25,700. As expected, people living in Zimbabwe are ranked the poorest with $200 per person. The report also observes that North African countries all rank highly on the list despite recent instability. According to the report, wealth per capita refers to the average wealth of a person living in each country. It excludes government held wealth. The report however also notes that all the African figures are below the global average of $27,000, with top ranked worldwide countries such as Switzerland and Australia standing over $200,000.

In total wealth rankings however Botswana performs dismally in the report. Total wealth, according to the report, refers to the private wealth held by all the people living in that country. South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Kenya, Angola, Tanzania, Ghana, Ethiopia emerge top, with top ranked South Africa estimated to hold over $610 billion, Egypt, $313 billion and Nigeria, $270 billion,
