Selebi-Phikwe still reeling under HIV/AIDS burden

SELEBI-PHIKWE: As the international community commemorated World AIDS Day yesterday, Selebi-Phikwe remains with the burden of having the highest HIV prevalence rate in Botswana.

At 26.5 percent, highest among females at 31.2 percent and at 26.5 percent among males, the copper/nickel mining town has a worrying prevalence rate.  Selebi-Phikwe District AIDS Coordinator Lameck Myengwa said more needs to be done to understand the factors contributing to spiralling infections.

He told Mmegi yesterday that Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) remain a serious problem in the district.
