BPL apologises to Sankoyo supporters

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) has apologised to Sankoyo supporters for what they call poor communication between the club officials and supporters with regard to kick-off time for their match against BDF XI on Tuesday.

BDF XI won the match by a solitary strike, handing Sankoyo Bush Bucks their fifth defeat of the season.

The game was initially scheduled to start at 6:00 pm but BPL moved it to 5:00 pm.

The information did not reach the supporters and nearly led to a pandemonium at the gates when supporters arrived only to find that the match was already underway.

“It is common cause that lights at the Maun Sports Complex are faulty and as such the game was brought forward to 5pm from 6pm to minimise disruptions to the match,” BPL chief executive officer (CEO), Bennett Mamelodi said yesterday.

Mamelodi also said the information regarding the change of kickoff time was communicated to Sankoyo Bush Bucks, BDF XI and match officials.

“Unfortunately the pre-printed tickets for the match still had the kickoff time of 6:00 pm, and the sales people never communicated the new kickoff time to the supporters when they bought the tickets,” he added.  The BPL CEO said he takes full responsibility for the miscommunication to the supporters and the people of Maun.

BDF XI’s victory elevated them to 21 points from 10 games, giving them motivation ahead of their crunch Mascom Top 8 quarterfinal second leg against Police XI this Saturday.

collected 11 points from 10 games.

In other games played on Tuesday, Rollers maintained their good run, beating ECCO City Greens 2-0 to stay at the top of the log standings.

Manqoba Ngwenya and Jerome Louis netted to hand Rollers their seventh win of the season.

They remain unbeaten this season after 10 games in the league. The defending champions have collected 24 points so far.  ECCO on the other hand remain rooted at the bottom of the log standings, having collected just two points from 10 games.  They have not won a single game, drawn two and lost seven. With another Francistown side, TAFIC having relegated last season, the odds now look stacked against ECCO who remain the only elite league side from the second city.  Extension Gunners played to a 2-2 draw with visiting Orapa United at the New Lobatse Stadium.

Patrick Lenyeletse scored a brace for Orapa United while Monageng Thaele and an own goal from Emanuel Nlu ensured the game ends in stalemate.

The game between Letlapeng and BR Highlanders failed to produce the winner, ending 1-1.

The draw did not help either of the sides who both remain in the danger zone. Letlapeng and BR Highlanders have now collected only four points each after 10 games.
