Banana skins await giants in Top 8

FRANCISTOWN: The 2014 Mascom Top 8 first leg matches presents giants with banana skins as they enter slippery ground when they travel to the north. Last year’s losing finalists, Township Rollers make the trip to Serowe to face tournament debutants, Motlakase Power Dynamos tonight.

It will be the first time Rollers talisman, Segolame Boy plays before the home crowd since his off season switch from boyhood club, Miscellaneous of Serowe. Boy is having a dream season at Rollers where he is banging crucial goals.

The youngster will be eager to show his magic in front of home fans following his big money move to the Gaborone giants. 

Boy who might be key in today’s clash has also made it to the national team where he is proving his mettle. Other potential match winners at Rollers are Namibian international striker, Jerowe Louis, Motsholetsi ‘Viva’ Sikele and Kobamelo Keibaikanye. They will come up against a Motlakase side that has not done well in the league this season. In their last five fixtures, Motlakase lost 1-0 to Nico United, 4-0 to BMC and 3-1 to BDF XI then drew 1-1 against Satmos and Gaborone United.

However, the hosts can rise to the occasion against big sides as evidenced by the result against GU. Motlakase proved a tough nut in the clash against GU, only succumbing to a last minute Lovemore Murirwa stunner.

Tomorrow afternoon, another interesting first round quarterfinal clash

will be in the copper mining town of Selebi-Phikwe where unpredictable Nico United host Mochudi Centre Chiefs. Nico coach, Kenneth Mogae has never lost to Chiefs in a competitive fixture and this should worry his Chief’s opposite, Mike Sithole.

Last month in a league clash, Nico held Chiefs to a 2-2 draw though the Kgatleng giants went into in a rich vein of form.

Chiefs are still riding high and occupy third spot in the league, while Nico are 10 places below in 13th.

Their meeting tomorrow pits former ECCO City Green players against each other in a cup competition for the first time. Chiefs have former ECCO men, Tendai Nyumasi, Ontse Ntesa and Keabetswe Jenamiso while Nico has the likes of Mogomotsi Samson and Trinity Nko. The players left troubled ECCO in the off-season.

Despite boasting stars, the Mascom Top 8 has proved elusive for Chiefs since its inception and a brighter start might ignite hope that the Kgatleng giants will emulate the likes of Rollers, Gaborone United and BDF XI who have won the cup.   Meanwhile on Sunday afternoon, another giant, Gaborone United is in action against FC Satmos.
