Local Govt pursues P30m poverty eradication refund from OP

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) is in hot pursuit of more than P30 million it is owed by the Office of the President, Mmegi learnt on Wednesday.

Reporting before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Permanent Secretary, Boipelelo Khumomatlhare, said he was pursuing P30.4 million that his ministry had spent on poverty eradication projects.  As the department in charge of the flagship government programme, the OP holds all funds expected to be used in poverty eradication initiatives and issues Letters of Authority to various implementing partners, such as the MLGRD, to use the funds when needed. 

However, it was revealed on Wednesday that for the last two years, the Local Government ministry has been spending its own money from a “Below-the-Line” account.
