Tsimako not going yet, employment extended

President Ian Khama's decision to rehire Police Commissioner Thebeyame Tsimako on a 12-month contract upon his retirement may be an indication of government's indecision about who should succeed him.

While according to a press release from the Botswana Police Service issued yesterday President Khama has approved  Tsimako's application for retirement with effect from June 5, 2010, he nonetheless re-hired him on a one-year contrac. Already there is speculation  that  government may be playing its cards close to the chest and would want to ensure that whoever ascends the helm of the police is in its good books. "All along the government knew that the Commissioner would be leaving. 
He can't be said to be handing over or orientating his successor, as the logical successors are people who are well versed with police work,"  said a police officer, who spoke on condition of anonimity. Tsimako has two deputies, Kenny Kapinga and Ikotlhaeng  Bagopi.

Tsimako has served the Botswana Police for more than 40 years.
