They qualified through the play-offs after a stalemate with blood rivals, Egypt in the group stages. Algeria triumphed 1-0 at a neutral venue to make their third appearance after they qualified in 1982 and 1986. Although the Desert Foxes have not progressed beyond the first round, they have not performed badly.

In 1982, they managed to beat the then West Germany and Chile before losing to Austria. Four years later, they fared badly, managing only a 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland.
