"The DSTV signal was not hacked because Philibao decoders cannot decrypt the DSTV signal. In the recent, a test broadcast was accidentally run unencrypted hence the free-to-air (FTA) decoders were able to receive the test broadcast feed," he clarified.
The unencrypted test broadcast was run in an open form and it was not a marketing strategy, he explained.Sekgororoane further told Mmegi that the test broadcast was later encrypted on the morning of Friday January 4, 2013, and the FTA decoders lost reception of the DSTV channels.
He said that any unauthorised viewing of DSTV channels obviously leads to loss of revenue to the company, and also to the state in the form of forgone taxes, levies and value added tax. Multichoice maintained that all its channels are broadcast in an encrypted form so that only authorised viewers with a DSTV decoder and a smart card are able to view them. However, it is evident that an FTA receiver tuned to the right frequencies and a dish pointed to the right satellite can receive the DSTV signal, albeit encrypted.
0.DSTV has been the craze on Facebook in recent times. Multichoice is no stranger to hackers and infringement.Last year scores of Chinese retailers were arrested for selling a decoder called the Magic Box which offered access to all DSTV channels for free. However, it allegedly emerged that there was no law to prosecute the suspects.
