During a Kgotla meeting in Molepolole on Tuesday Member of Parliament for Molepolole North, Daniel Kwelagobe, declared that alcohol drinkers are contributing positively to the economy.
Kwelagobe encouraged the youth and women to take advantage of the programmes that the government has for them, which he says, are financed by alcohol consumption.
He broke the mood of a seemingly tense meeting with his statement and left many giggling when he said in jest that drinkers, including him, have contributed millions that are now benefiting the youth and women of this country.
He said that there are government policies that the youth and women should be taking advantage of, adding that drinkers finance these policies. "The government has made so much money from us drinkers. We have made P180 million and you are failing to make
He scolded the youth and women for failing to make use of programmes, which were designed with the aim of getting them out of poverty. "You complain of unemployment while there are millions set aside for you," he said.
He went to say that people are always saying Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) denies them opportunities "but we [MPs] never see you coming to complain. Why don't you come forward to complain because it is your right to complain?"
Kwelagobe said that poverty eradication programmes do not only entail backyard gardening, but weaving, bakery, small stock and poultry, which they can choose from.
