Batswana show a determined spirit in court

Batswana will no longer sit by and watch as politicians decide affairs of their country ľand their future.

Mmegi Online :: Batswana show a determined spirit in court

This has been evident from Batswana’s massive attendance of the just-ended constitutional case at the High Court and the Court of Appeal.

Yesterday, as CoA president Justice Ian Kirby announced the verdict of the five-men panel, the crowd clapped hands and ululated.

Young and old, unemployed and employed, Members of Parliament and dozens of lawyers among others were in attendance.

Nothing would dissuade them. Not the many hours of listening to legal arguments; not hunger nor fatigue would stop them.

Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) leader Duma Boko, was all praises for the spirit shown by Batswana and the judiciary.

“Justice has prevailed, democracy has prevailed. It is all that we wished for,” he announced with a flourish

thereafter.

For his part, former Member of Parliament for Gaborone Central and Botswana Congress Party  (BCP) leader Dumelang Saleshando told Mmegi on the sidelines:

“It is regrettable that it had to go this far. I see this as an issue addressing differences within the BDP and we feel that the Attorney General (AG) abused its power and the constitution.”

Saleshando also called out for the AG, Athalia Molokomme to resign from her office saying it was the right thing to do.

“She misunderstood her role as the AG, she is not fit for office.

The AG is mandated to serve the nation not a party. If I were her, I would have long resigned,” he said.
