Rowe heads to Egypt

Rowe was sacked last month by the Botswana Football Association (BFA) after a string of unimpressive results. He was replaced by his assistant, Stanley Tshosane, a former Zebras coach.

Yesterday, Rowe refused to shed light about his new appointment. 'I do not want to talk to you. Why would I talk to you while you have been hammering me for my entire stay here?' he said. Rowe was appointed Zebras head coach almost two years ago though he was not a favourite of some supporters. A source close to Rowe confirmed yesterday that the man who was brought up in Ipswich, England will be jetting out of the country this week to take up his new appointment in Egypt. Until this week, Rowe has been an employee of BFA since his contract with the association runs until July 2009. Though he was relieved of his duties, he still remains in the association's pay-roll, till the contract expires.

BFA chief executive officer Tosh Kgotlele could not confirm the reports of Rowe's Egypt appointment. 'I heard over the radio that he has been appointed and he has not come to us to formally tell us. But if that is the case, we expect him to come and sit down with us since we have a contract so that we can map a way forward,' he said yesterday.

The Evening Star website says Rowe is expected to start work on Thursday and will be responsible for all the youth teams at Al Ahly, starting with the Under-9 to Under-19. Al Ahly have won the Egyptian Premier League for the last four seasons and are managed by Portuguese, Manual Jose. They play at a stadium that holds over 74,000.
