Batshu resigns

Batshu is serving notice until the end of February 2008. Batshu who was stationed at the Francistown Court had only served the court for a few months.

He was offered the job late last year by the Ministry of Local Government (MoLG), after retiring as the Botswana Police Commissioner. He started his new job on October 1, 2007. 'It is true and I can confirm that I have asked the Permanent Secretary in the MoLG that I am terminating the appointment as member of the Customary Court of Appeal by end of February for personal reasons,' Batshu said.

He, however, did not give reasons for his terminating the appointment stating that he was not able to manage his time properly. 'The job is very good. I enjoyed my short stay at the customary court,' he said in a telephone interview.

Quizzed on whether he had ambitions of contesting the Nkange Constituency as earlier reported, Batshu became cagey. 'I am still a civil servant and I cannot talk politics now,' he said, adding that he can discuss politics in March.

However, the area Member of Parliament for Nkange constituency, Ambrose Masalila has in the past year reported the former Police Commissioner to the Botswana Democratic Party central committee for campaigning to topple him from his seat. The rivalry was quietened by Batshu's appointment to the customary court.

Masalila has always maintained that he is desirous of taking another term as an MP.
