Extension 27 reservoir of soccer stars

However, few people probably know the brighter side of Extension 27 as a producer of football stars who have taken the Mascom Premier League by storm.

The likes of Pontsho Moloi (Mochudi Centre Chiefs), Dirang Moloi (Notwane), Tshepo Rakola (Mogoditshane Fighters) and Tshepo Molefe (Gaborone United) are some of its products who have thrilled the spectators. Some have continued to shine in the lower division, while others just serve soccer in a variety of ways. Visiting Extension 27 during the weekend can at times be an unforgettable experience as football dished out in the area is always entertaining.

For the coming month, the area will be buzzing with football as Boiteko Fuel Tank Services has decided to sponsor a tournament. According to managing director Sonny Phuthegang, the tournament is planned to keep the youth of the area busy on Sundays. The tournament, which started this past Sunday, will run until March 24.

In an interview with Mmegi Sport, Phuthegang said yesterday that they decided to sponsor the tournament as a way of keeping the youngsters away from drugs and alcohol. 'This initiative will help keep youngsters busy because drugs and alcohol abuse is becoming a social problem. Through such games, I want them to understand that they can live a clean life,' he said.

Phuthegang disclosed that the response from the community has been overwhelming and he plans to make it big in the coming years. 'I believe that there is a lot of talent in the area, which has not been fully utilised. It is high time that teams started coming here (Extension 27) to search for more talent as the likes of Pontsho (Moloi) have proven,' said Phuthegang.

He added that the tournament will help promote a spirit of good sportsmanship and neighbourliness among the residents in the area. 'I grew up in Extension 27 and I believe that it is part of my responsibility to give back to the community which has supported me from an early age,' he said.
