Mogae to know her fate today

The offences were committed in 2006. Chedza pleaded 'not guilty' to the two counts before Gaborone's Extension Two Magistrate, Nokothula Moyo. It is alleged that on June 16, 2006 at around 10pm, the police on patrol along the Nelson Mandela Drive came across an Isuzu bakkie parked on the pavement facing the Independence Avenue junction. When the police approached, the driver of the vehicle drove-off in a zig-zag manner. The police followed as the vehicle swerved from lane to lane before stopping in the middle of the road.

On approaching the vehicle the police saw a woman coming out and going around it.
Police said the smell of alcohol made them suspect that the woman was in possession of it (alcohol).

The police demanded a driver's licence and that is when they came to know that it was Chedza. They drove her to the police station for an alcohol test. It is said that initially when the police approached her, she told them to speak in English, as she does not understand Setswana.

The court heard that on being told that she was going to be tested for drunkenness, Chedza got out of the vehicle claiming that she was not drunk and that she could even pass the tests which are applied to drunken people.

She then demonstrated by walking on the white line of the road and thereafter touched her nose successfully. At the police station, she refused to give a breath specimen and to sign the printout, which she tore before telling the police that she only took two glasses of wine.

Senior Magistrate Nokothula Moyo presides over the case while Bafi Nlanda prosecutes.
