Darkness Saves Kalavango In Volleyball Duel

After racing into a 2-0 lead, Kalavango totally collapsed thereafter to let their opponents to pull level and were staring defeat in the decisive set when the umpire, Gofaone Golekanye saved them. She ended the match prematurely at the SSKB, saying that she could not see because of darkness. Kalavango started the game well, winning the first two sets, only to falter badly in the third and fourth.

Former Mafolofolo star, Lizzy Gasekgonwe was influential for Kalavango in the first two sets. Kalavango slipped at the crucial moment and almost lost a game they could have won easily. After crumbling so badly in the first two sets, Mafolofolo redeemed themselves in the third set, narrowly winning 25-23. They took the fourth set 25-22 with Dipolelo Chidzala posting an outstanding display. Mafolofolo were leading the deciding set 7-4 when the referee stopped the game.

The decision did not please the coaches who protested that there was enough light to proceed. Mafolofolo coach, Kabo Ntshinogang was happy that his team will have a chance to go back to the drawing board and prepare better. He expressed displeasure at his side's poor display. Even though they were in the lead in the final, he said it was possible that Kalavango could have carried the day considering the way his side played. 'We were only lucky to level the score,' he told Sport Monitor.

He said his players were unable to play well owing to insufficient training because of work and school commitments. Kalavango coach, Batsho Mbangwa said it was the discretion of the referee to stop the game and that there was nothing they could do.
