Often music is said to be a tool that has the power to bring people together and reveal deeper emotions - this was all evident on this night. The night, which was fun-filled, attracted quite a number of audience members who were not shy to sing their hearts and lungs out in an attempt to win themselves prizes.
Many hopefuls took to stage as they battled out English and French songs, even though the organisers kept emphasising that it is not a competition but rather that the point is to have fun, many of who sang had their eyes on the big prize being the cell phones. The host of the evening Kalvin Kolanyane-Kesupile told Showtime that the Karaoke night is part of the three build up events towards the big event called Fete de la Music, which will take place on June 21.
'The point of the event was to have fun but in a way that people present a different form of Karaoke which we named Versus simply because we were presenting French and English songs,' he said.He further said that there will be other events that will follow this one which includes the battle dance - a dance off competition to be held in April and DJ hero which is a life mix competition to be held in May this year. Even though contestants who say French songs did not make it to the finals, people seemed to have enjoyed the music more especially songs by famous French musicians Julien Clerc and Joe Dassim. English singers proved to have an edge over their French counterparts as most of them made it to the very end. First prize winner was Nayana Santos who sang The Greatest Love Of All by Whitney Houston, she was all smiles as she walked away with a prepaid cellphone sponsored by Orange and an opportunity to perform as part of the 2013 Fete de la Musique entertainment while second position went to Mildia Keiling who performed Hero by Mariah Carey, she also won herself a cell phone.Precious Koosaletse who performed I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston came third as she was awarded a hamper bag with a notebook, stationary, a T-shirt and a wallet.
The organisers feel that the event was well-attended as it had a good turnout but mostly they are happy that many people enjoyed themselves. 'The feedback we got from attendees was amazing as it showed that people were happy that we gave them this sort of event and this was showed by the huge number of registrations we had for the songs and how the audience engaged with the performances,' he said.
